The Modern Tapis – Wrapped in Heritage, Reimagined with Intention
The tapis—a handwoven wrap traditionally worn by women across the Cordillera—has always been a vessel of identity, dignity, and rhythm; a cloth that has moved with us through ceremony, survival, and celebration. But how do we carry that ancestral cloth into the present day, especially as diasporic beings navigating new terrains?
We ask this very question all the time—and responded with the Modern Tapis.
If we can reimagine the bahag with care, collaboration, and cultural grounding, we can reimagine the tapis too. Co-developed with community culture bearers and grounded in Indigenous partnership—it is a dialogue. An offering. A reweaving of past and present.
The Modern Tapis brings the spirit of the traditional wrap into contemporary form—designed with new silhouettes and soft structure to move with you in your everyday rituals. Patterns echo the textiles of Ifugao, and beyond, reinterpreted through today’s color palettes and material comfort. It’s made for dancing. For resting. For standing tall. For remembering.
This isn’t about making Indigenous wear “trendy.” This is about honoring the thread while living in the now. This is about diasporic healing—one wrap at a time. Sourced from our long time partners in Kiangan in collaboration with culture bearer, Marlon Martin.
Custom Modern Tapis are available by request. Made with you, not for you—because collaboration is part of the weave.
