In 2021, I learned about my family’s past and discovered the story of my great-grandfather, Manuel Cadiente. His journey from Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur to Honokaa, Hawaii, where he worked on the sugar plantations, opened my eyes to the sacrifices and resilience of our ancestors.

Manuel, along with his cousins, embarked on a journey that not only changed their lives but laid the groundwork for generations to come. Learning about this chapter of my family history stirred emotions within me. It became clear that my kuleana, lies in honoring the legacy of those who came before me—those who toiled on unfamiliar soil, seeking a better life for their families.

This realization propelled me to further Elle Karayan, a platform dedicated to sharing the myriad stories within our diasporic community. Each narrative—both told and untold—reminds us of our collective struggle and triumphs. As I navigate my own path, I am committed to ensuring that these histories are not forgotten, but celebrated.

Having two children of my own, I feel a deep responsibility to create a world where we do not have to fight to represent our culture but make it exist. I want them to understand the significance of the land in Nueva Vizcaya, where my mother was born and raised. This land, rich with memories of summer visits filled with mangoes, rice cultivation, and the vibrant sounds of farm life, connects us to our roots. It’s where my daughter has had the privilege of experiencing the soil that my family has nurtured over generations.

My great-grandfather's decision to return to the Philippines after years of labor, I see a powerful narrative of resilience. His savings helped purchase the land that continues to sustain our family. This connection to the earth is crucial, especially in today’s discussions about sustainability and climate change. I believe that supporting those in touch with the land is essential for fostering a healthier futu

The journey through our history is never-ending. There are always new stories to uncover and narratives to share. As we celebrate Filipino American History Month, I encourage everyone to engage with their own histories. Talk to your elders; they hold invaluable wisdom that can illuminate your identity and purpose.

Understanding our past shapes who we are today. These stories are not just personal; they are tools of resistance against indifference. They empower us as modern-day warriors in our communities.
Happy Filipino-American History Month! May we continue to honor our past while forging new paths for future generations.
